Cambridge Police have issued 20,000 more summonses this year--most of them for parking violations--than in any previous year, Central Square Police headquarters announced yesterday.
Captain Patrick J. McCarthy, chief of the Traffic Bureau, said breaches of all-night parking regulations make up the majority of these "non-criminal" summonses.
One reason for the tremendous increase has been the great influx of politicians in the Cambridge area during the last few months. "First we warned them," McCarthy said, "since many of the poles were from out-of-town.
The police have been conducting an intensive crackdown in recent weeks. McCarthy explained, "If they don't keep out of restricted streets now, we'll run into a lot of trouble."
