Yale 150 lb. Crew Gets New Coach

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Both Yale and Penn gave a boost to their 150-pound crew squads when Yale named a part-time 150-pound coach to fill a spot that was vacant since the end of last season, and Penn announced its intention to financially support its team.

In the absence of a regular 150-pound coach, Waldo Johnston, former rowing coach at Pomfret, had offered his services to the Yale A.A. and was subsequently appointed to the post.

Previously, Johnston was executive secretary of the Yale Alumni Board. He still retains his old position, however, and will share the job's duties with his new post with the crew.

The Penn A.A. decided to give "limited support" to its 150-pound oarsmen after student opinion seemed to strongly favor them. Previously the rowers, operating on funds supplied by the members themselves, staged a highly successful tour through Europe last summer during which they won the Thames Challenge Cup in the Henley Regatta.

Bert Haines of Harvard is the only full-time 150-pound coach among the major rowing powers of the East.
