Eight Professors Leave College Posts This June

Eight University faculty member will retire at the end of the present academic year, Provost Buck announced yesterday. The list includes the names of Professors Bruning, Sherburn Rudenberg, Sheffer, and Sanders.

Heading the eight is Heinrich Bruning Lucius N. Littauer Professor of Government. Chancellor of Germany from 193 to 1932, Bruning came to Harvard in 1937 He now plans to teach in Germany, a the University of Cologne.

Also retiring is George W. Sherburn professor of English, considered the world's leading authority on Alexander Pope. A former chairman of the departments of Modern Language and English Sherburn came to Harvard in 1939. He is now working on a lengthy edition of the letters of Pope.

Rudenberg Leaving

Reinhold Rudenberg, Gordon McKay Professor of Electrical Engineering, is also retiring. Rudenberg who has been at Harvard since 1939 is the inventor of the electron microscope. He is responsible for many of the basic theories relative to the operation of electric machinery and power systems.

Also on the list is Henry M. Sheffer '05, professor of Philosophy, a leading mathematical logician. Sheffer returned to his alma mater in 1916 and has been here ever since. Besides teaching, he has been developing the theories of Notational Relativity and Pre-Assertional Logic.

Sanders on List

Thomas H. Sanders, professor of Accounting, is also leaving this year. A former president of the National Association of Cost Accountants and a frequent consultant in both government and industry, Sanders has been with the Business School since 1921.

Also included on the list is Guillermo Rivera, associate professor of Spanish, who has been at the University since 1909.

William G. Lennox, associate professor of Neurology, also retiring, is a leading expert on various aspects of epilepsy.

Finally, John J. Penny, senior preceptor in Romance Languages, is also leaving. He became an assistant professor in 1935 and senior preceptor in 1938.
