Band Enlists Over 50 Freshmen; Hits Field As Largest in History

The largest band in Harvard history will be hooting and tooting its way through half-time extravaganzas this fall.

Almost 160 men will make up this season's edition of the University's loudest, mellowest, and most famous musical organization. The group, according to Band manager Dana M. Hastings '53, will include some 53 freshmen, the largest number of men from any class ever admitted to the band at one time.

On the other hand, Hastings noted, 57 members of the Class of '52 left the group's ranks as of last June, the largest number of men ever leaving the Band in one lump.

The Band, after three rehearsals this week, officially opens its season at 2:20 p.m. Saturday, with all its 159 members expected to be in attendance. Although tryouts have actually closed, Band manager Hastings expects that veteran upperclassmen who have yet to return to the fold, plus alumni, will swell the group far over the 160 man figure.
