A surprise move to ask Senator Joseph McCarthy (R-Wis.) to investigate local colleges was defeated at a meeting of the Cambridge City Council yesterday.
As the Council was about to adjourn, Councillor John D. Lynch arose and offered a motion that called for McCarthy's Senate Permanent Investigating Committee to come to Cambridge and "drive the Reds out of the city."
The council voted 4 to 3, to refer the motion to committee. Councillor Edward J. Sullivan, who supported the measure, said, "It may stay there forever."
