Varsity and junior varsity 150 pound crews opened their spring seasons Saturday on the Harlem River, defeating the Columbia lightweights in both races.
Over the Henley distance of a mile and fixe sixteenths, the varsity crossed the finish line in 6:00, a length ahead of Columbia, and the jayvees won by half a length in 5:58. The Harlem was at its best for the J.V. race, accounting for the time lag between the first and second boats.
Stroked by Captain Dick Lincoln, the first Harvard shell got off to a fast start. It maintained a length lead during the entire race, finishing with a 35 stroke.
The Junior Varsity under stroked the Lions from the start, and stayed about a half length behind them, until the half-way mark. Then the Columbia boat foundered in rough water and the jayvees moved half a length ahead, a load they held through the finish.
"Though handicapped by an unfamiliar course, both crews rowed well, finishing in fine form, and with very fast times," said Coach Ted Reynolds.
