Frogman Retrieves Lost Golf Club Thrown into Muddy Charles River

The indoor swimming season finished last weekend, and the outdoor meets don't start until mid-July, but James C. Murphy '54 nonetheless dove into the Charles River last night. Murphy claims that the purpose of his swim was to retrieve a golf club thrown in by Robin Farkas '54.

Farkas was taking a few practice swings on the bank in front of Dunster when the club accidentally flew out of his hands and into the river. Murphy's aid was then sought, and he volunteered his frogman suit and his services.

After taking 15 minutes to dress, Murphy dived into the muddy waters armed with only a flashlight, since it was dark then. He came up with the club after searching for about a quarter of an hour. Murphy said he found the club stuck upright in about a foot of mud, eight feet under the surface, and about 20 feet from the bank.

Murphy, no novice at the business, went spear-fishing off the Gloucester coast this winter.
