Varsity Baseball Team Loses Andy Ward; Crew Practices for Yale Race on Thames

NEW LONDON, Conn., May 31-- The Varsity heavies turned in a far superior time than Yale as both crews took time trials in preparation for their four mile race on the Thames River here. June 12.

The Crimson, stroked by Larry Brownell, was timed in 23 minutes, 18 seconds, while the Elis were clocked in 24:46. Yale rowed two hours later, but both shells contested with headwinds in fairly strong flow of fresh water. But Yale may have also had an outgoing tide against it.

The varsity rowed against its junior varsity and combination crews for the first two miles and was ahead by five lengths. It competed against Bill Leavitt's fine freshman eight on the second two miles and opened up three lengths on the Yardlings.

The Yalie eight picked up two lengths on its jayvee over the first two miles, but the Eli combination crew edged the varsity over the second part of the race.

Crimson Favored

Harvard is a heavy favorite in this race. As a matter of fact, Harvey Love's crew is now rated a favorite in any race that doesn't include Navy. Ever since its early loss to Princeton, when Love reshuffled his boatings, the Crimson has been second only to the Middies, and these were close seconds.

When both the Crimson and Yale rowed in the E.A.R.C. regatta in Washington two weeks ago, the Crimson was a third of a length off the Middies in second place. Yale failed to quality in the opening heats
