NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Presidnet-emeritus Conant will return to Cambridge early in February to confer on University matters for the first time since be became High Commissioner to Germany in 1953.

Henry J. Kellerman, Public Affairs Advisor in the State Department's Office of German Affairs, reported yesterday that present tentative plans call for Conant to be in Cambridge on Feb. 8 and 9.

The exact nature of his visit here is undisclosed.

Presiden Pusey's office yesterday said it did not know that the former President was planning to visit the University.

According to William Bentinck-Smith '27, special assistant to the President, Pusey had received no indication that Conant will return. "I can't think of any possible function that's planned for early February," he stated.

Two-Day Stay

Kellerman indicated however, that Conant's two-day stay would definitely concern University matters. "He told me personally," the State Department official stated," "the it would definitely not be a speaking engagement, but would involve some other University affair."

Kellerman said that Conant's final schedule had not yet been arranged and would depend on the state of affairs in Germany within the next few weeks. He expected that the High Commissioner would be in the United States for two or three weeks, probably arriving late in January.

"Everything has been worked out exactly. There are several important German political events, including ratification of the Paris Pact, coming up-That's why we are a little unsure about exact dates yet," he stated.

No Formal Welcome

Uncertainty about the day of Conant's arrival would preclude a formal function for the ex-president in Cambridge and suggest a series of private conferences with University officers. The ex-president emeritus has returned only twice to Cambridge since he went abroad to Germany. However, he has never returned to confer on University matters.

After leaving Cambridge, Conant will go to Michigan State to speak at its centennial celebration on Feb. 12, the State Department said. Depending on the state of German affairs, his visit may have to be out short by as much as a week. This would mean that he would he in America from about Feb. 1 until the middle of the month.
