Varsity Baseball Team Bows To Judges Despite 12 Walks

By Lee Pollak

The varsity baseball team yesterday received 12 walks, made only one error, and reached first base safely 19 times; but it still couldn't win the ball game. Brandeis, after losing four straight in Greater Boston League play, defeated the Crimson 7 to 3.

Listless pitching and poor hitting in the clutch cost the Crimson the victory. Pitchers Bob Kessler, Jim Fitzgibbons, and Bob Cooke allowed the Judges 13 hits. Kessler, the starter, left the game halfway through the second inning and reliefer Fitzgibbon was pulled out for a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Three-Base Error

The varsity put men on base in all but the third and eighth innings, but stranded 14. A three-base error by left-fielder Dick Hoffman and singles by Jack Kirkwood and Roger Morgan resulted in two Brandeis runs in the first inning. Four singles followed with a double by second baseman Harvey Littman brought three more tallies for the Judges in the top of the second.

Two walks and a single by Ray Maesaka brought in the varsity's first run in the bottom of the second. Don Butters scored when Art Noyes was thrown out at first. The rally was cut short when pinch-hitter Nod Felton hit into a double play.

Captain Dick Schoor batted in the varsity's second run in the sixth inning with a long double which landed less than five feet inside the left field line. Catcher George MacDonald scored on the play.

Chauncey Scores

The Crimson's biggest chance for a rally came in the bottom of the ninth when Brandeis pitcher Arthur Shorehow, who walked 19 last week against Northeastern, issued his tenth, eleventh, and twelfth free passes. The final walk forced in Bill Chauncey with the varsity's third run. With bases loaded and two outs Rae Maesaka flied to center to end the ball game.
