Board Rules 'Cliffe Students Must Wear Long Shorts, Hide Shoulders

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

'Cliffedwellers must wear Bermuda-length shorts and keep their shoulders covered when they are on the Radcliffe Quad, the ground floor of dormitories, or in any other public place, the Board of Hall Presidents announced Tuesday.

The Board ruled thigh-length shorts, halters, and bare midriffs improper for public exposure. It also requested girls wear shoes at all times.

Sunbathing will be permitted on the roofs of Cabot, Whitman, and Barnard Halls, however, where these rules do not apply.

"We must remember that we are in the middle of a city, and dress accordingly," Mrs. Hedy Schumacher, head resident of Holmes Hall, commented. "We have gotten many complaints from alumnae and residents of Cambridge on this matter," she said.

The two Radcliffe quads have often been used for outdoor studying and sunbathing, but the publicly-located Linnean St. side of the quad has been a main trouble spot. The Board considered a proposal to build a fence screening this area from the street, but took no action.

Dormitory officers, head residents, and the undergraduates themselves will enforce the sunbathing rules, which are substantially the same as last year.
