Dr. C. Sidney Burwell has been appointed the first Samuel A. Levine Professor of Medicine, Dean George P. Berry announced last night.
Burwell, a leading investigator in the field of cardiovascular diseases, has been Research Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Medical School since 1935.
Charles E. Merrill, a New York investment banker, established the Levine Professorship last November.
Burwell served as a dean of the Medical School until 1949 as well as being a professor of medicine. He resigned from the former position then to devote all his time to teaching and research.
The Levine Professor has worked in the field of cardiovascular diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital and Johns Hopkins Medical School.
