Three undergraduates have won $400 for the University and $40 for themselves by taking first place as a team in the William Lowell Putnam intercollegiate mathematics competition.
Everett C. Dade '58, of Lionel Hall and Dover, N. H. David, B. Mumford '57 of Kirkland House and Summerland Key, Fia., and Kenneth G. Wilson '56 of Lowell House and Concord formed the successful College team. The University of Toronto placed second and Yale was third.
Two hundred and fifty-six contestants, including 12 other College students, from more than 70 institutions competed in a six-hour written examination.
Covering elementary and intermediate calculus, differential equations, analytical geometry, and higher algebra, the examination was graded not only on correct answers, but also on the originality and brevity of the solutions.
The competition was established in 1938 by Mrs. William Lowell Putnam.
