Varsity Bows At Net, 11 to 0 To Tar Heels

Powerful Freshmen Defeat Milton in First Match, 8-1

Undefeated North Carolina continued its triumphant tour of the east by blanking the varsity tennis team yesterday, 11 to 0, on the Soldiers Field courts. Earlier this week the Tar Heels overwhelmed Williams and Amherst.

Coach Jack Barnaby said "We were much better than when we met in the south. Our doubles play was a far cry from the clobbering we got before; we are now close to respectability with four and possibly five good doubles teams."

Haegler Plays Well

In the first singles match, the Tar Heels' Herb Browne swept Ham Gravem, 6-3, 6-0. At two, Captain Alex Haegler played his finest tennis of the year, displaying a very powerful forehand, but bowed to Tom Bradford, who rotates with Browne and Bob Payne in playing one. Payne defeated Conrad Fischer at three, 6-4, 6-1.

Brooks Harris gained only three games against Pete Green, while Dan Mayers lost to Ron Kerdasha in the number five match, 6-2, 6-0. At six, Maynard Canfield played a steady game, although Don Thompson edged him, 7-5, 7-5.

Doubles Matches

In an excellent match, the Crimson's first doubles team of Haegler and Harris, serving and volleying brilliantly, lost to Browne and Bradford in the third set, 13-11. Haegler and Harris had a match point at 11-10. At two and three, Fischer and Canfield and Gravem and Heckscher were defeated in close matches.

The freshman team opened its season auspiciously yesterday with an easy 8 to 1 victory over Milton on the Soldiers Field Courts.
