Joseph L. Walsh '16, Perkins Professor of Mathematics, will act as Master of Adams House for Reuben A. Brower, professor of English, during Brower's sabbatical leave next year. Walsh is a Charter Member of Adams House, and served for many years as a tutor in Mathematics.

When asked about the appointment, Brower said, "We couldn't have a better man to carry on the traditions of the House or one who would be more welcome to staff and students."

Walsh lectures in Mathematics 222, Interpolation and Approximation, and in Mathematics 301, Seminar in Topics in Analysis. He teaches a section in Mathematics 1, and will also serve next year as Visiting Lecturer for the Mathematical Association of America. Walsh's special field is mathematical analysis.

Brower plans to use his leave to write on Alexander Pope and edit a volume on translation for the Comparative Literature Department. He also hopes to include a trip to Greece, Italy, and Cambridge, England. "Above all I want time to read, write, and think," he said. "I need some time to digest the many new impressions I have been receiving in swift succession since moving into the Harvard community and Adams House."

Walsh received his doctorate in Mathematics here in 1920. He later studied in Paris and Munich. A twenty-year member of the National Academy of Sciences, he served as president of the American Mathematical Society in 1949-50. He was in the Navy during both world wars, and has continued to be a consultant in Naval Research.

During his year as Acting Master, he will live in Apthorp House with his wife and fifteen-year-old daughter.
