Crimson Varsity Soccer Defeats Springfield, 4-1

A strong Crimson soccer team defeated Springfield College, last year's national co-champion, 4 to 1, in a surprising upset on the Gymnasts' home field Saturday. Superior conditioning brought the victory, as coach Bruce Munro's squad scored three goals in the final five minutes.

The victory was particularly impressive since Springfield had six lettermen from last year's championship squad and had previously given up only one tally in four games this season.

During the first period the highly reputed Gymnasts dominated the play and scored its only goal. But by the second quarter the Crimson team started to click and began to press its opponents hard.

By the last quarter the superior conditioning of Coach Munro's eleven began to tell as the Gymnasts rapidly tired. The decisive break came when, with five minutes left, John Hedreen scored on a penalty kick.

Thereafter the Crimson kept pounding away at the enemy goal. Center forward Roger Tuckerman picked the ball up from teammate Bill Rapp, faked past the Gymnasts' fullback, pulled the opposition's goalie out of the cage, and fired for the varsity's third score.

Barry Russman, a substitute inside left, tallied the final Crimson goal.

This latest win of the varsity gives the Crimson a record of four wins and one loss.
