N.E.T.C. Honors Joshua Logan And WGBH

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Oct. 18--Author-director Joshua Logan and local radio and TV station WGBH, sponsored by the Lowell Institute Cooperative Broadcasting Council, of which Harvard is a participating institution, received honors from the New England Theatre Conference here this afternoon.

Logan, who was given the annual creative Achievement Award of the conference, was hailed as "a titan of our theatre, whose courage, craftsmanship, and creativity have immeasurably enriched the scope and texture of the American stage."

WGBH received a regional citation for its significant contributions to live theatre.

In his address before the NETC convention, Logan spoke on "Problems in Directing." He began by quoting an Air Force instructor, who had told him, "There's very little to stage direction. All you have to do is arrange it so you can see 'em and hear 'em." And Logan ended by repeating what Stanislavski once inscribed on a photograph for him: "Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the art."

Logan described his experiences in Moscow as a student of Stanislavski, "The Method," the director's proper role, the analysis of a live performance, and some specific problems he encountered while directing William Inge's Picnic.
