Princeton's Language Felt 'Generally Poor'

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Princeton's brand of "generally poor" English is "becoming worse every day" Willard Thorp, Princeton '26, warned in a recent Princeton Alumni weekly.

Citing the influence of Time Magazine, "officialese," and especially of professors, Thorp, Chairman of the Princeton English Department, termed the new English "No-English."

"Listened to with half an ear," he says, "No-English sounds impressive, authoritative, and even powerful." He explains that proponents of this style are able to compose complete nonsense "with the self-assurance of an advertising copywriter or an editor of Time."
