Crimson Netmen Vanquish M.I.T.

The varsity tennis team opened its regular season yesterday by defeating a determined but outclassed M.I.T. squad, 8 matches to 1, on the losers' new clay courts.

Captain Dale Junta, suffering from a back injury incurred on the team's recent southern trip, was forced to default his match to Jeff Winicour after three games of the first set. Peter Krogh, who regularly plays at number 7, substituted unofficially for Junta and defeated Winicour, 8-6, 6-1. Second singles player Larry Sears, also unable to play because of a blistered hand, was replaced by Sophomore Tim Gallwey, who defeated Bob Kenefick, 6-2, 6-1.

In other matches, Ned Weld trounced Pete Moss, 6-1, 6-0, Alan Goldman won over Bob Hodges, 6-3, 6-0, Bill Wood defeated Tom Cover, 6-0, 6-3, and Laurie Pratt beat George Koyt, 6-1, 6-0. In an unofficial match, Jim Cameron downed George Koo, 6-0, 6-2. The varsity also won the three doubles matches.

The Freshman team won 7 to 2, but M.I.T. showed indications of a powerful varsity to come, as its number one player, Cuban Davis Cup star Raul Karman, defeated Bob Bowditch, 6-0, 8-6,
