Inexperienced Crew Will Face First Big Home Weekend Race

The first big crew weekend of the season will see a very inexperienced varsity heavyweight boat take on Syracuse, B.U., and M.I.T. in one of the six races rowed on the Charles today.

The lightweights, victorious over M.I.T. last week, will race the Tech oarsmen again along with Navy for the Haines cup. The Middies lost a close race to Princeton last Saturday and should provide tough competition for the Crimson.

Because of its lack of experience, Coach Love said that the chances of the heavy crew could not be appraised beforehand. "There was no veteran nucleus at all. It was a complete rebuilding job," he said. Five of the crew are Sophomores and none of the other three men was consistently on the varsity last season.

However, they have been able to gain their positions over members of last year's varsity who are now on the J.V. Sophomore stroke Bob Lawrence was very successful at that position in his Freshman year. And as Love said, "They have been around enough to know what racing is about."

According to Love, the varsity has turned in some good times in practice races. "This squad can work out well," he asserted. "Despite bad weather, we have got in good work."

Syracuse Has Strong Finish

Syracuse, whom the varsity beat in a close race last season, has many veterans. It is a team noted for its strong finishing sprint, and will give the Crimson a powerful race. Love also expects MIT to be improved this year because of last year's strong Freshman team. B.U. lost by over three lengths to Yale this past Saturday.

Freshman coach Bill Leavitt said that his crew is "a little faster than last year's." However, Syracuse is claiming the same thing. The race last year was close, with the Crimson winning by only a half length while setting a freshman record.

Both crews are about the same height, but the Syracuse squad is a little heavier.
