Crimson Nine to Encounter Penn In Important Game Here Today

The varsity baseball team will get a chance to play its first Eastern Intercollegiate League game in two weeks if the sun toasts the rain-soaked Soldiers Field diamond back into playing condition today. The Crimson is scheduled to meet a strong Pennsylvania squad this afternoon at 3.

The top standings of the league will be at stake since a Crimson victory would give the varsity a 5-0 league record and a tie for first place with Dartmouth. If Penn wins, however, the Quakers, now in third place with a 3-1 record, will move into a second-place deadlock with the Crimson.

Four-game winner Dave Brigham will go to the mound for the home team, seeking to maintain his outstanding 1.73 league earned run average. Penn will probably start Junior Leonard Weed, whose knuckleball may spell trouble for the Crimson. The varsity batters have not made very inspiring showings against the "junk" pitchers that they have faced so far this year.

The Quakers have built up a surprising 10-1 overall record this season and, like the Crimson, have demonstrated unexpected batting strength, especially in the late innings. Their only loss came early in the spring at the hands of Army, which the Crimson beat 9 to 5.

Crimson to Play Holy Cross

Tomorrow the varsity travels to Worcester to take on the Holy Cross team. Coach Norm Shepard has named right-hander Byron Johnson as his starter. He will be seeking his fourth victory against one defeat and will be opposed by Jim Farina of the Crusaders.

Holy Cross has a 4-2 record to date but usually comes up with a fairly powerful team.
