Parents of National Merit Scholarship winners chose Harvard as "the best college in the United States" in a recent poll conducted by John L. Holland, director of research for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
M.I.T., Princeton, and Yale ranked second, third, and fourth respectively in the estimation of the 764 parents who answered the poll. The College received 17.7 per cent of the first-place votes, more than twice as many as runner-up M.I.T.
The study also found that the "ideal" college was co-educational and had a national reputation, an outstanding faculty and high scholastic standards. A majority of parents preferred colleges to be small, private, and without religious affiliations.
