Professors Gain Research Grants

Paul C. Mangelsdorf, professor of Botany, his wife, and Samuel A. Stouffer, professor of Sociology, received a total of $81,000 in research grants from the Rockefeller Foundation during the last quarter of 1958, a Foundation report announced recently. In addition, Francis M. Pipkin, assistant professor of Physics, has been named an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow by the Sloan Foundation.

Mangelsdorf and his wife will use $69,000 to establish an expanded program for studying the biology of the corn plant.

The Rockefeller Foundation awarded $10,000 to Stouffer to continue a study of leadership in local communities.

An unspecified stipend accompanied Pipkin's Fellowship. One of five newly appointed Sloan Fellows from New England, he will use the gift to support work in the field of nuclear orientation. Since Sloan grants carry no specification as to the nature of research, Pipkin said he might use some of the funds for study in other areas.
