On the strength of excellent shooting from the floor--46 per cent accuracy--Brown defeated the varsity quintet at the I.A.B. Saturday night, 69 to 60. Cliff Ehrlich and Jack Bellavance led the visitors with 22 and 19 points respectively, while George Harrington with 20 and Bob Repetto with 15 were high for the Crimson.
Despite the varsity's fine showing off the backboards, which resulted in a 46-36 rebounding advantage, Brown was able to throw enough shots in the hoop to offset this superiority.
A slow start which sent many of the fans downstairs to watch the swimming meet characterized the entire first half, except for a brief Crimson spurt toward the end. Trailing 24-22 with five minutes to go, the varsity began to utilize a good fast break and pulled ahead, 30 to 25. But the Bruins quickly closed the gap, and went off at halftime on the short end of a 32-31 score.
With Bellavance feeding and Ehrlich hitting, Brown went ahead, 37 to 36, at 2:40 of the second half, and never lost the lead. The pace was considerably faster, and as both teams raced up and down the court, the only salient feature of the half was Brown's fine shooting.
At the five-minute mark, with the Bruins leading 43 to 37, the varsity went into a 2-1-2 one which appeared to be the answer to the problem. But Brown hit a hot streak and upped the margin to 11 points, 60 to 49, with only five and a half minutes left.
At this point, the Crimson switched into a full-court press. Brown, however, successfully out-maneuvered the press, and held on to win.
In the preliminary contest, the Bruin freshmen jumped away to an early advantage, led 29 to 23 at halftime, and stayed ahead throughout, winning 58 to 51. Gary Borchard and Archibald Cox topped the Yardlings in scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively.
