For the first time since its creation, the Lowell professorship will be a permanent appointment and will go to a regular faculty member.
Jones is an outstanding scholar in the field of American literature. He is a former president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is currently editor-in-chief of the John Harvard Library.
The Lowell Professorship was established in 1956, at the same time as were the Ford Professorships.
