(The following is a minority view of the Editorial Board of the CRIMSON.)
The Cambridge merchants' belated and dissembling tug-of-the-forelock to the venerable Kringle will neither amuse nor bemuse. For, quite plainly, their hasty stringing of garish lights across the city's principal intersection is but a clumsy provincial imitation of those enlightened mertopoleis where Christmas is a real festival. Here, five days after the event, the meagre decorations will be thrown upon a heap of slag.
This chilling fact points inevitably to the paucity and the miserliness of the local business mind. For these men Christmas does come but once a year, and only grudgingly at that. Their souls are cramped, their devotion mere lip-service. In Christian towns the Yuletide stretches from August to February: here it encompasses a meagre two months.
And not even that, if truth be known. For the little colored lights will not even be lit for another four weeks. Once again, the penny-wise mentality of these short-sighted planners threatens to betray our spiritual values. It is too late to play hide-and-seek with our chances for salvation.
