Track Squad Beats M.I.T.

The varsity track team overwhelmed M.I.T., 76 1/2 to 27 1/2, last night, in an absolutely overwhelming meet in the Snake Pit. Coach Bill McCurdy was saving his front-line performers for Saturday's epochal clash with Manhattan, so the times, heights, and distances were none too great. But then, they didn't have to be.

Sid Marland turned in probably the best effort of the evening, a 22 ft., 7 in broad jump. Marland's all-time best jump led a Crimson sweep of the event. The varsity also swept the high jump, as Jack Spitzberg and John Voosen tied for first at 5 ft., 10 in.

Spitzberg was the meet's only double winner; he also took the hurdles in 5.4. Jim Leath made use of a fast start to capture the dash in 4.6.

Other first-place winners for the varsity were Leigh Callaway with 48 ft., 1 in. in the weight, Jay Mahaney with 12 ft. in the pole vault, Charley Olken with 44 ft., 8 in. in the shot, John Cawthorne with 1:21.5 in the 600, Greg Baldwin with 2:21.8 in the 1000, and the mile relay team of Leath, Don Kursch, Ralph Casperson, and Cawthorne with 3:45.3.

Tom Goddard of M.I.T. beat out varsity 600 man Don Kirkland in the mile in 4:28.1. In a special race, captain Mark Mullin defeated teammate Eddie Meehan by a step in a 1:17.0 600.

The Yardlings won their meet, 73 1/2 to 30 1/2. Aggrey Awori led the Crimson with two firsts--a 4.7 win in the dash, and a 5.2 effort in the hurdles.
