Charities Drive Reaches $16,000

Wednesday's collection in the Combined Charities Drive fell $500 short of the estimated amount, Martyn Greenacre '64, publicity chairman of the drive, said last night.

Yesterday's estimated total of $4,500 put the three-day mark at $16,000, the same as last year at this point in the drive. The 1960 drive also had a poor third day in the collecting.

Individual contributions have risen, with $50 as the largest single contribution from the Yard, and $40 as the second largest.

The halfway point in the Combined Charities Drive was reached and passed Tuesday night when $12,500 of the $24,000 goal was collected. The Yard again led the Drive, tallying $2,900 of the $5,990 contributed on the second day.

Winthrop residents contributed the highest average gift, $8.10 per person, while $7.25 was the overall College average. Leverett, Kirkland, and Eliot led in the House totals, and the response of Lowell has improved so that it will now probably attain its goal.

Tuesday night's results were better than had been expected, according to a spokesman for the drive. He indicated, however, that continued effort must be made if the goal is to be reached, because response often declines toward the end of the week.
