Cagers Nudge Amherst, 64 to 62, Lose to Yale After 7-Hour Trip

After taking a close 64-62 decision from Amherst last Thursday, the varsity basketball team ran afoul of the weather and the Yale five Saturday night in New Haven and went down to an 81-57 defeat.

Center John Dowd, scoring with drives and jump shots, paced the Bulldogs with 25 points. Guard Bill Madden had 18, and his running make, Chip Old, contributed 10. Gary Borchard was high for the Crimson with 12, followed by captain Bob Bowditch and Denny Lynch with 11 each.

The varsity squad took the 1 p.m. train to New Have, and did not arrive until 2 p.m. Conditions in New Haven were so bad that reporters covering the contest had to take the players from the station to Payne Whitney Gymnasium in private cars.

A scorekeeper's error nearly ruined the Crimson in the Amherst game. The manager keeping the official book awarded the Jeffs two points they did not score, and the mistake loomed large as Amherst began to catch up.

Working out of coach Floyd Wilson's latest offense, four men reached double figures Thursday. Borchard and Lynch each totaled 14, Bowditch added 12, and Pete Kelley had 11.
