Navy Swimmers End Eli Winning Streak After 201 Meets

A 16-year, 201-meet Yale winning streak ended Saturday as Navy swimmers toppled the Elis, 48-47, in the last lap of the final 400-yard freestyle relay.

Half a length behind at the final turn, Midshipman Don Diget edged out Bulldog anchor man Bill McMaster by an arm's length to hand Yale its first dual meet loss since 1945.

Going into the final event Middies trailed 41 to 47 after Elis had smashed records and cleaned up first and second spots in both the 200-yard backstroke and the 440 freestyle. Altogether, Navy set five new Annapolis Pool records and the Bulldogs three before a howling crowd of more than 2,000.

Middy Curt Norfleet took the day's top honors, breaking the 50-yard freestyle mark with 22.2 and the 100 free with 49.5 Both Annapolis relay teams set new records: 3:47.5 in the 400 medley and 3:22.3 in the 400 freestyle.

Bill Chase, Dave Burgess, and Bob Boni lowered marks for the Elis. Chase took the 440 freestyle in 4:32.1, while Burgess splashed his way through the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.7. Boni captured the 200-yard backstroke with a 2:08.8.
