City Council Approves Bill On Student Cars

The city council yesterday passed a resolution favoring a House bill by which all out-of-state students must register their cars with the Commonwealth.

Councilor Alfred E. Vellucci, sponsor of the resolution, said that the police had trouble identifying cars with "foreign registrations" that block streets during snow removal. With the passage of the bill, House 2116, "we can put the finger on the right owners and take them to courts in East Cambridge," Vellucci asserted.

Under the bill, non-resident students would be required to file both their home and local addresses and the name of the school they attend.

Vellucci stated that the University had voiced approval of the measure. He then noted that "Harvard and M.I.T. are taking over the whole city" and that children of local residents cannot find land to build homes on.

Disapproving of the proposed land swap between the University and the city, Vellucci also came out against the inner belt route "in its entirety."
