The renovation of Weld Hall will probably have to be postponed until the summer of 1962, although work on Grays will go ahead as planned this summer, Arthur D. Trottenberg '48, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, reported yesterday.
The original plan was to begin the Weld job in September, 1961, immediately after the moving of the offices on Weld's first and second floors to the top of the new five story building on Mt. Auburn Street.
But construction on the top half of the building, whose lower floor will house the University Health Services, has fallen behind schedule and probably will not be completed until January, 1962. Although renovation in Weld could begin at that time, it is more likely that the job will be postponed until the freshmen in the dormitory leave for the summer, Trottenberg explained.
Depends On Size
Work might begin before the summer if there are no freshmen living in Weld next year. This would be possible, according to Trottenberg, only if the Class of '65 is "substantially smaller" than this year's freshman class.
Plans will not become definite until late spring, however, "when we are certain of the size of next year's freshman class and the dates for the opening of the offices on Mt. Auburn St., Trottenberg stated.
Weld--described by its inmates as "a depressed area"--will be changed to look like Matthews, Hollis, Holworthy, Thayer, and Grays. Workmen will paint the dormitory and install new lighting and heating facilities, new flooring and paneling. The cost of the job is estimated at less than one-third that of replacing the building. Weld will be the last hall in the Yard to be renovated.
