Penn Tops Five, 94-63

PHILADELPHIA, March 3--With 12 minutes remaining in the second half, Bob Bowditch blocked a driving shot by Pennsylvania's Bob Mlkvy as the Quaker star came down on a fast break. It was probably the only thing the Crimson did well tonight, as they lost to Penn, 94 to 63, at the Palestra.

After a three-point play by Pete Kelley made the score 3 to 2 in the second minute of the game, the Crimson fell behind on John Wideman's drive. It never caught up.

Mlkvy Leads Team

Wideman, one of the best of Penn's ten talented sophomores, Mlkvy, and J. D. Graham took turns ripping through the Crimson defense. Gary Borchard scored on a jump shot with eight minutes remaining in the half to narrow the deficit to seven points, 28 to 21. But Mlkvy and Wideman kept hitting, and the Quaker lead continued to mount.

Fifteen straight points stretched the Penn lead to 45 to 23, before Gene Augustine's jumper at the half-time buzzer made it 45-25. The Quakers scored on 20 of 36 shots in the half, a 56 per cent average.

Any Crimson hopes that Penn might cool off during the intermission were quickly dispelled as Mlkvy and Graham scored quick baskets at the start of the second half.

Harvard Attack Weak

As for Harvard, its attack could best be termed ineffectual. Kelley and Denny Lynch each scored a few jump shots, but for the most part the shots weren't even close. Crimson long sets and jump shots rebounded right into the hands of waiting Penn players.

Harvard shooting was not too accurate--when the team managed to get off a shot. Wideman. and speedy Sid Amira consistently relieved the Crimson of the ball as it came down court, and moved it to the other end for an easy basket.

With remaining, both coaches emptied their benches, and in the junior Penn started with a 71-41 lead, so it didn't make much difference.

Tonight the Crimson meets Princeton at Dillon Gym.

In the freshman preliminary, the Yardlings raced to a 40-19 lead midway in the first half, but saw it dwindle to 40 to 34 at half-time. Bob Inman led a second-half rally that brought the Crimson to an 83-67 victory. Inman and Lenny Strauss each scored 24 points.
