The Radcliffe Institute for Independent Study has received a grant of $250,000 from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund of New York City, President Mary I. Bunting announced Thursday.
The Institute will conduct intensive research into such questions as the nature of educated women's motivations, and what changes should be made in the undergraduate education of women.
Almed at talented women whose scholarly or creative activities have been interrupted by marriage or other circumstances, the Institute is an experimental program.
Twenty Associate Scholars, women with a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent in achievement, will open the Institute next fall. They will receive $3,000 grants for their one year appointment.
Nearly one third of the initial five year budget of $1,575,000 for the Institute has already been raised in gifts and pledges.
Radcliffe College has also announced the purchase of the red-brick apartment house at 83 Brattle St., Cambridge, effective March 29, 1961. The apartment building will be converted gradually as vacancies occur to accommodate married students from Radcliffe.
