Varsity Opposes Williams In Crucial Soccer Contest

By Robert A. Ferguson

Preparing for today's crucial game with Williams, coach Bruce Munro pushed his soccer team through a Monday practice that included wind sprints, alisthenics, distance running, and a full field scrimmage lasting more than an hour. "We've got to be in condition for this game," he explained. "Williams is probably the toughest team we'll face all season.

Munro's respect for his opponent is not misplaced. Williams won the New England Soccer Championship last year, including a 3-2 victory over the Crimson. This year the Ephmen are even stronger with a front line depth capable of keeping the varsity's defensive unit running hard all afternoon.

Against this running offense, Munro will send a solid Harvard team that has scored eight goals in two games, while allowing only two. It is a team that "may go undefeated" if it can only get by Williams today.

Necessary for a Crimson victory is a brilliant performance from Chris Ohiri. The Nigerian center forward has scored seven of the team's eight goals and may have to score frequently to offset a potent Williams offense.

Ohiri "pulled something" in the first half of the Cornell game last Saturday, but continued to play in the last two quarters and should be ready for the Ephmen.

Along with a healthy Ohiri, Munro will need strong defensive efforts from goalie Wally Whitney and fullbacks Lou Williams and Walt Winslow. Whitney made "a lot of good stops" in the Cornell outing and was not responsible for one of the Big Red scores.

Defenseman Williams has been highly effective in both varsity games, stopping virtually everything to come his way and setting up the offense with booming goal kicks. Winslow at right fullback, is a sophomore, lacking only experience.

Munro's varsity will be strengthened by the return of outside right Eb Klufio to top form. Klufio missed the first weeks of practice but looked good in Monday's scrimmage and may start in today's game.

The Crimson has the disadvantage of playing at Williams, but the possibility of a New England Championship, an undefeated season, and revenge for last year's loss will have Munro's booters primed for their most important effort of the season.
