A windy day and a fast field gave Dartmouth an 11-0 win over a determined Harvard Rugby Team this morning.
Dartmouth took control of the ball at the beginning of the game. Adeptness in the Dartmouth backfield proved fatal to the Crimson's hopes for victory, the Indian's first score coming in the opening five minutes of the game. From then on Dartmouth had the game in its pocket. The Crimson forwards tried in vain to stem the Green tide. Buzz Miller, Mike Auer, and Bart Francis were particularly effective in the back but could not stop the speedy Indians.
Crimson Men Caught
Throughout the game, the Dartmouth backs were able to pass the ball out; Harvard would hold on to the ball a second too long and be caught by Big Green backs. As individuals, Harvard's players were excellent; as a team they left something to be desired.
Dick Carey, playing scrub half, was successful in getting the ball back; but unfortunate fumbles often prevented the Crimson from scoring. Neither John Van Schalwyk, Ian Paisley-Tyler, nor Keith Julian was able to break loose.
Indians Now Undefeated
Today's victory leaves Dartmouth undefeated in four starts. The Montreal Wanderers were first to fall to the Indians' hatchet, followed by M.I.T., Holy Cross, and the Crimson. The Big Green looks like a good bet to cinch the Eastern Rugby title this year after having been defeated by Amherst in 1961. The Crimson's chances for high standing in the Eastern League competition are difficult to determine at this time.
In the first game of the twin bill, the Dartmouth second team defeated Harvard's second fifteen by a score of 3-0. The seconds now have a 1-2 record going into a rematch with M.I.T. next week.
