Harvard Downs Hapless Bowdoin 4-1 As Rookies Contribute to Hockey Win

Sahlin's 3 Points Spark Easy Win

By Joel Havemann

Harvard's rookie line contributed three goals as the Crimson rolled over the Bowdoin Polar Bears 4-1 at Watson Rink last night. Pete Sahlin won individual honors with a goal and two assists.

The Crimson controlled the puck in the Bowdoin zone from the opening face-off, and needed little more than two minutes to score. Baldy Smith got his fourth goal in three games on the rebound of Bob Clark's attempted deflection of Gordon Price's slap shot. A few minutes latter, the rookies got their first marker as Sahlin scored on assists from Ken Burnes and Jorge Gonzales.

The Crimson took advantage of two Bowdoin weaknesses to control the puck for most of the rest of the game. Some-times they would skate up to a Polar Bear defender, flip the puck over his stick, and fly by to regain control of the disc, with no checks to hamper them.

When the Crimson tired of this strategy, they become a little fancier. One forward would shoot the puck directly onto a Bowdoin stick; then a second would skate up to the Bear and almost invariably succeed in grabbing he disc away. Puck control was no Bowdoin strong point either.

Second Period Scoreless

Bowdoin goalie Dave Coupe and Crimson goalie Brandy Sweitzer both made some excellent saves to keep the second period scoreless. Coupe's best came off a ten foot drive by Gene Kinasewich, who seemed able to do everything but score.

Coupe apparently became frustrated with his teammates' ineptness at three minutes of the final period. During a Crimson rush, he swung his stick at the head of Ike Ikauniks, who had the misfortune of hanging by the crease at the time. Ikauniks went down, but soon skated off the ice under his own power. A couple of stitches were taken in his right ear, and reports indicate that he'll recover quickly.

Harvard was quite inept itself during most of the ensuing five minute penalty to Coupe. Finally, at 7:42, Burnes deflected in a Bill Fryer slap shot. Sahlin also assisted.

Twenty-six seconds later, Jorge Gonzales closed out the Crimson scoring, Sahlin getting another assist. Ed Fitzgerald finally best Brandy Sweitzer at 12:19, while the Bears had a man advantage. It was only Bowdoin's second shot in four power plays.
