Fencing Team Meets CCNY Powerhouse In New York Today

The fencing varsity journeys to New York today to face the City College of New York, perennial powerhouse of East Coast fencing. While Harvard hasn't come close to beating the C.C.N.Y. fencers in years, the Crimson should make the best showing of recent history this afternoon.

The varsity has shown good strength in posting a 3-1 record to date, losing only to a strong New York University squad. Captain Nicholas Spitzer, All-Ivy in epee last year, should pace the Harvard effort in epee and should get some assistance from Paul Winig.

Dan, Kirsch, Pete Busch and Dave Dooley have turned in encouragingly strong performances in their foil duels--an area in which the Crimson has been woefully weak in past years. It should give the varsity a needed boost if these three come through with several victories today.

In the sabre, Paul Zygas and Larry Butler both turned in good performances against M.I.T. Thursday, and could provide a few triumphs today also.

But the Beavers always have an extremely strong squad. Last year, they destroyed Harvard, 18-9, and would, understandably, like to repeat that feat. If the New Yorkers are to be thwarted in this attempt, it will take magnificent performances from the Crimson fencers.
