Swimmers Meet Penn, Columbia

The undefeated varsity swimming team will run its victory string to 17 consecutive wins this weekend when it downs Penn in Philadelphia today and Columbia in New York tomorrow. The Quakers and Lions, two of the weakest teams in the Ivy League, may win a few events, but only because coach Bill Brooks will probably use his front-line swimmers sparingly.

Last year the Crimson beat Penn 66-39 and should find the going no harder this season. However, the Quakers' outstanding performer of last year, a diver named Fisher, returns and will undoubtedly make that event an exciting one. Against Columbia in 1962, the varsity won every event and racked up a near-perfect 76-19 score.

The two meet trip will serve as preparation for the Crimson's crucial meeting with Princeton on Feb. 16. That contest will decide second place in this year's Yale-dominated league race, and may produce record times in, several events.

The freshmen will meet an excellent Deerfield team in an away match on Saturday afternoon. Coach Benn Merritt's squad, also undefeated this year, is an unusually well-balanced team with considerable depth, and real promise for next year.
