Labaree Named Dean of Williams

Williams College announced the appointment of Harvard historian Benjamin W. Labaree as its Dean last week. Assistant Professor Labaree, currently on leave of absence from the University, will assume the Williams post this fall.

Last winter, Labaree accepted an Associate Professorship of History at Williams. When the present dean, Robert Brooks, resigned the Williams post to join the foreign service, Labaree was chosen for the job. Aside from his work with the President and the Provost in the college administration, Labaree plans to continue teaching history.

Having received his B.A. from Yale in 1950 and his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1957. Labaree served as Senior Tutor of Winthrop House from 1958 to 1960. During this time, he formulated the plans which reorganized the Yard into the five "House" units.

In 1962, Labaree published a book on the history of Newburyport, Massachusetts, during the Revolutionary War. And while on leave of absence, he has been working on his second book dealing with the Boston Tea Party, which will be completed and published sometime next year.
