Seymour Harris Asks Aid From Government For Catholic Colleges

Seymour E. Harris '20, Lucius N. Littauer Professor of Political Economy, has urged that the federal government support Roman Catholic colleges, although he opposes aid to parochial schools.

Writing in the May issue of the national Catholic journal Ramparts, Harris said he saw no constitutional obstacles to aiding Catholic colleges. He pointed out that for many year the government has supported institutions of higher learning with religious affiliations--"even Brown University when it had Baptist affiliations," the New York Times reported.

Harris, who is not a Catholic, wrote that "the larger the contribution of government to higher education, the more difficult is likely to become the problem of Catholic schools that have to compete with government-subsidized institutions."

Harris, a consultant to the Secretary of the Treasury, noted that Catholic colleges underpay their Faculty members.
