Army, Navy Challenge Baseball Team In Eastern League Showdown Games

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The varsity baseball team suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday to Boston College, but if the team wins today and tomorrow, the week will have to be accounted an overall plus.

This afternoon's opponent, at 3 p.m. in Kindlestick Park, is Navy, last year's Eastern League co-champs. Tomorrow Army, leading the League this year with a 4-0 mark, comes to town at 2 p.m.

Staubach In Center

Righthander Andy Luther (4-0) will get the call against Navy this afternoon. The big senior, who beat Columbia 5-1 last weekend, will be pitching to some hot hitters, including a center fielder named Roger Staubach, who is hitting. 385 and reportedly has a strong arm. Catcher Gene Parcinski and first baseman-Captain Hank Kettlehodt are also over 300.

The Middies' pitchers have been taking their lumpes this year, though, with losses to Penn and Dartmouth and a shocking 14-5 setback at Yale last Saturday.

Army Tough

Army is a different story. The Cadets, led by sophomore pitcher Barry de Bolt, are unbeaten on the year except for an 8-2 loss to a pretty good outfit called the New York Yankees.

The Cadets will be going against Paul Del Rossi Saturday afternoon. Del looked less than sharp in his last outing, giving up eight runs in six innings to B.C. But he has beaten Army two years in a row and would love to make it three.

The Crimson, will probably be without the services of hard-hitting sophomore rightfielder Jim Tobin, who was in Stillman, earlier this week with a cold that might turn out to be mononucleosis.
