NMA Asks Negro Harvard President

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The President of the National Medical Association proposed Monday that Harvard select a Negro to be its next president.

The suggestion was made by NMA President W. Montague Cobb at a news conference during the organization's annual national convention. He said Federal appeals court Judge William H. Hastie would be "an excellent choice."

Cobb said, however, that Hastie might not be available because "he may be elevated to the Supreme Court" by the time an opening at Harvard occurs.

The NMA is a predominately Negro organization with 5300 members.
