Varsity Matmen Stop Penn, 17-12

Menaced by the pudgy spectre of Bruce Jacobsohn, Penn co-captain and star heavyweight, the Harvard wrestling team hastened to defeat the Pennsylvanians 17-12, clinching the meet before Jacobsohn had a chance to wrestle.

Harvard Captain Ben Brooks decided the issue by defeating Steve Sawyer 4-0 in the 191-pound class, off-setting Jacobsohn's 4-1 victory over Tack Chace in the following match.

The Crimson had good reason to be wary of Jacobsohn. Last year, with Penn trailing by two points after all but the heavyweight contest, he decisioned Chace easily to sink Harvard, 16-15.

Penn jumped into a quick 6-0 lead as co-captain Richie Sofman beat the Crimson's Howie Henjyoji 5-0 at 123 and Gary Pillard downed Bing Sung of Harvard 6-1 at 130. But three straight shutout decisions gave Harvard a lead it never lost. Tom Gilmore, wrestling 137, for the Crimson stopped Duncan Cocroft 5-0, Howie Durfee defeated Mike Schiffman 4-0 at 147, and 157-pounder Ed Franquemont clobbered John Boyd 7-0.

Jeff Grant, wrestling in his first varsity meet, raised Harvard's lead to 14-6 by pinning Tom Traud at 5:15 of their 167-pound match. Gerry Gates of Penn then defeated Dave Greuel 5-1 in the 177-pound class.
