Harvard's cross country team defeated Cornell Saturday, 21 to 38, without the services of ailing Walt Hewlett.

The Crimson's Dave Allen won the race, setting a record of 26:21 over the five and one-sixteenth mile Ithaca course. His time erased the mark set by Cornell's Steve Machooka in 1961.

Allen finished 20 seconds in front of runner-up Jim Cunningham of Cornell. Harvard swept four of the next five positions. Jim Baker was third, turning in his best performance over a five-mile course. Sophomore Bob Stempson finished fourth, Jon Chaffe was sixth, and Joe Ryan was seventh.
