Soccer Team Ruins B. U.

By Jonathan B. Marks

The varsity soccer team needs a hard workout.

They coasted to a 9-0 win over a lack-luster Boston University squad the Business School Field Saturday morning. They looked good, controlling the ball with a short sharp passing game, attacking and shooting almost at will.

But the team still hasn't been pushed, and that has Coach Bruce Monro worried. He's pleased with the ball control that his halfbacks and line have shown talking up 19 goals in their first two games. But, as he said after the game Saturday, "I hope it holds up when we get in against a team who has as much skill as we do."

Lack of Success

Harvard started fast Saturday, carrying the ball deep into B.U. territory time after time. But inaccurate shooting and several good saves by John Lack, the B. U. goalie, kept the game scoreless until almost the end of the first quarter.

Then within a minute, center forward Jim Saltonstall popped one in on a rebound and Charles Njoku took a pass from inside Bill Schaefer and scored from his wing position.

After a second quarter of skillful play constantly missed opportunities, Harvard got down to business. Fred Akuffo grabbed a pass from winger Dudley Blodget far out in the field, took it past several B.U. defenders and slammed it by Lack.

Polk, Njoku Scope

Then, in quick succession, Hugh Polk knocked in a pass from captain Bill Kerstetter, and Njoku recorded his second, getting his foot on the ball in a melee right in front of the goal and lining it in. Harvard had a pleasant game of target practice in the last quarter, notching four more. Lutz Hoeppner and Robin Hahuel got one apiece, and Haven Pell, top scorer on the Freshman team last year, scored two.

Unscored upon in its last two games this season, the team meets Williams here on Wednesday for its next contest.
