Green Freshmen Edge Harvard Frosh, 28-22

The Pea Green football team made Indian pudding out of Harvard's freshman squad yesterday but not without difficulty nipping the Crimson, 28-22.

Richie Szaro piled up 98 yards and scored two touchdowns and two extra points to lead both teams in rushing. His performance included a 58-yard run for a touchdown which was the final tally of the day.

Balanced Offense

Harvard's offense showed balance for the first time this year. Quarterback Bill Kelly who started the game and was in for all but four plays was 9 for 15 in the passing department and averaged 4.3 yards a carry. Fullback Pete Varney, replacing injured team captain Tom Miller, averaged 4.6 yards a carry and had one 40-yard run nullified on an illegal procedure penalty.

Dartmouth was first to get on the board with a 70-yard drive in four plays culminated by a 25-yard run for the touchdown just before the end of the first quarter.

After a stalled Harvard drive and a Dartmouth fumble on their own forty, Richie Szaro and Bill Kelly combined to lead the yardlings to their first score early in the second period. Szaro smashed off left tackle on the five yard line and went in for the six points to tie the game. His extra point split the uprights and put Harvard ahead, 7-6.

Minutes later Kelly connected with Ed O'Malley on a 36-yard pass play to run the score to 13-6. Szaro's kick was good. O'Malley's tally accounted for the first freshman points this year not scored by the many-talented Szaro.

Relentless Attack

Dartmouth then went to work with a relentless short passing attack. After the second Harvard touchdown they took the ball and drove 95 yards in 12 plays, ending their march with a nine yard scoring run. Jim Chasey, the Dartmouth quarterback, passed to end Bob Calhoun for two extra points, tying the score at 14-14 as the half ended.

Storming back in the second half, the Pea Green scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter. The first followed a Szaro fumble of the Dartmouth kickoff. The second came five minutes later.

Both were on short passes, the first an eight-yarder and the second a 15-yard toss.
