Cambridge City Councillor Alfred E. Vellucci, often a vociferous critic of Harvard, took time out last night to say that when it comes to a choice between Harvard and Yale, Cambridge's very own college comes out on top.

Vellucci was host at a dinner for the Harvard varsity football team last night. The "Cambridge Italian-American Committee to honor Christopher Columbus' voyage and John Harvard's football squad's Victory over Yale" sponsored the dinner.

The committee was founded, Vellucci explained, after the Italian-American society in Cambridge read a headline--"Harvard Beats Yale, 29-29"--on November 25.

"A few years ago some Yale historians claimed that Leif Erikson and not Christopher Columbus discovered America," Vellucci said last night, "and since then I've been out to get the Elis, even if I have to use Harvard to do it."

Anticipating the spirit of the dinner, Vellucci introduced a resolution in the City Council Monday proclaiming yesterday as "Chris and John Day" in Cambridge.

"Pretty good combination, don't you think?" beamed the councillor.
