Harvard's lightweight crew passed its first real test of the season with flying colors last Saturday, as it caputured the Goldthwaite Cup for the 11th straight year, leaving Princeton and Yale in its wake.

The Crimson streaked over the 2000 meter course in 6:17.2, a full ten seconds faster than Princeton and 15 seconds ahead of Yale.

Coach Bo Andersen said yesterday that he was particularly pleased with the margin over Princeton. The Tigers had lost to powerful Cornell by only one second three weeks ago. Andersen said he had expected Princeton to give his undefeated first boat its only real challenge before the showdown with Cornell at the Eastern Sprint Championships this Saturday at Worcester.

Against Princeton and Yale, the Crimson oarsmen got the jump on their rivals with a full-stroking start. After 30 strokes Harvard had opened a full-length lead.

Stroking at 35

Stroking at 35 for most of the race, the Crimson widened its lead over Princeton to two full lengths by the 1000 meter mark. Meanwhile, the Tigers were pulling away from Yale.

As it crossed the finish line, the Harvard boat was two and one-half lengths ahead of Princeton and three and one half ahead of the Elis.

In the jayvee race, Harvard finished strong, cruising across the finish line with a 6:33.0 clocking, two full lengths ahead of Princeton and three in front of Yale. The Tigers had to turn it on in the final 400 meter stretch to overtake Yale.

Andersen said he was also proud of his third varsity boat, which beat Princeton and Cornell by ten seconds last Saturday. "We only put this boat together on Thursday and they really worked well together," he said. The victory was the final race of the season for the third boat. since only the varsity and jayvee crews will represent Harvard at the Easterns.
