Smarting from a narrow miss at an upset against Springfield, Harvard's varsity grapplers face a weak Rutgers team tonight at 8 p.m. at Rutgers.
"They're pretty much an unknown quantity," said Harvard coach Johnny Lee. "They're usually as good as most of the Ivy League, but this year I don't think they're having a very good season."
Rutgers was manhandled by Temple and Princeton but did manage to beat Yale.
The Scarlet Knights will rely heavily on two sophomore stars to contain Harvard in tonight's match. Joe Yacco will face Harvard's Paul Catinella at 137, and Jack Van Doren will oppose John Imrie at 177.
Both Imrie and Catinella have lost only one match this season, and both losses came on flukes. Imrie lost to his Columbia opponent when he accidentally pinned himself in the final 15 seconds of the match.
Catinella dropped a narrow 3-2 match against Springfield after some "dubious officiating," according to Lee. "Catinella's man had him in a figure-four leg ride," Lee said. "It's very hard for either man to do anything from this hold. Usually the referee will break it after 20 seconds, but his guy let it go on for three minutes, and the Springfield man won on riding time."
The 3-point advantage gave Springfield a narrow 17-15 victory.
Bob Panoff will fill in tonight for Howie Freedman, sidelined by a back injury two weeks ago. Tom Schnorr, who wrestled 115 against Springfield, will move up to 130 against Rutgers, replacing Bill Wasserstrom.
